In 1968 architect Norman Foster extended a now dilapitated cottage in the borough of Camden, London, with a lightweight structure of steel, concrete blocks and large span glazing. His resulting extension has since become an important work typifying industrial modernist architecture. GBA will bring this important work upto modern construction standards whilst dually constructing a new principal dwelling in place of the original cottage, and which will draw on the architectural character of Fosters previous work on the site. The proposed new dwelling will accommodate new kitchen, dining and living spaces together with three bedrooms, a studio and improved roof terraces and gardens. Subservient spaces will also be significantly improved throughout. Additionally the proposal aims to improve privacy both in visual and acoustic terms for the occupants of the house from the adjacent pub. Meshed facades function as visual and acoustic screens whilst also providing solar control. Passive design, green roofing, grey water recycling and high levels of insulation throughout are some of the sustaibability tactics employed within the project.
